### 3rd Grade Language Arts Lesson Plan: Phonics and Word Analysis
**Grade Level:** 3rd Grade
**Subject:** Language Arts
**Topic:** Phonics and Word Analysis
**Duration:** 50 minutes
---
#### **Learning Objectives:**
1. Students will identify and apply phonics rules to decode words.
2. Students will analyze words by breaking them into syllables and identifying root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
3. Students will improve their reading fluency by using phonics and word analysis strategies.
#### **Materials Needed:**
- Chart paper and markers
- Phonics flashcards
- Word analysis worksheet
- Smartboard/Whiteboard
- "Word Analysis" anchor chart
- Sample reading passage
#### **Common Core Standards:**
- **CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3**: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- **CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.A**: Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes.
- **CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.C**: Decode multisyllable words.
---
#### **Lesson Introduction (10 minutes):**
1. **Greeting and Warm-Up (5 minutes):**
- Begin with a quick warm-up activity where students clap out the syllables in words called out.
- Transition to a brief discussion on why phonics and word analysis are important for reading (i.e., helps us read new words, understand word meanings, etc.).
2. **Objective Overview (5 minutes):**
- Display and discuss the learning objectives with the students.
- Briefly introduce key terms: phonics, decoding, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
#### **Instruction and Guided Practice (20 minutes):**
1. **Phonics Rules Review (10 minutes):**
- Present common phonics rules using the Smartboard/Whiteboard (e.g., silent 'e' at the end of words, 'c' making the /k/ sound before 'a', 'o', 'u', etc.).
- Use phonics flashcards to demonstrate and practice these rules with students.
- Write example words on the board and have students decode them aloud.
2. **Word Analysis (10 minutes):**
- Introduce the "Word Analysis" anchor chart highlighting how to break words into components: prefixes, root words, and suffixes.
- Choose a few multisyllable words and demonstrate breaking them into parts on the chart paper (e.g., 'unhappiness' = un-happy-ness).
- Engage students in identifying and discussing the meanings of the parts.
#### **Independent Practice (15 minutes):**
1. **Decoding and Word Analysis Worksheet:**
- Hand out the worksheet containing a mix of single and multisyllable words.
- Ask students to apply phonics rules to decode words and use word analysis to break them into prefixes, root words, and suffixes.
- Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and support as students work.
2. **Reading Passage:**
- Provide a short passage for students to read independently, using the strategies discussed.
- Instruct students to underline any new or challenging words and write their decoding/analysis process in the margins.
#### **Closure and Reflection (5 minutes):**
- Recap the key points of the lesson by asking students to share one new thing they learned about phonics or word analysis.
- Conduct a quick class discussion where students share examples they found challenging and discuss solutions.
- Reinforce the importance of using these strategies in their daily reading and writing.
---
#### **Assessment:**
- Collect the worksheets and reading passages to review students' decoding and word analysis work.
- Observe students during guided and independent practice to assess understanding and application of strategies.
#### **Differentiation:**
- **For Students Needing Support:**
- Provide additional practice with simpler, one-syllable words before advancing to multisyllable words.
- Offer one-on-one or small group support during independent practice.
- **For Advanced Students:**
- Challenge them with more complex words or passages.
- Introduce additional prefixes and suffixes for extra practice.

This lesson plan encourages active participation, ensures clarity of phonics and word analysis concepts, and integrates a balance of instruction, practice, and assessment to support 3rd graders in mastering these foundational reading skills.
